Division of Legal Affairs and Treaties is a service of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation which provides advice on all legal issues arising in the course of the Ministry’s work, in particular within the domain of international law.
the tasks of the Division of Legal Affairs and Treaties are:

To provide an opinion, respond to any queries, and elaborate reports on all matters concerning international law;

To prepare, assist, and ensure the participation of Timor-Leste in negotiating international treaties and agreements;

To follow the processes with the ultimate objective of international vinculation??;
To execute the functions of trustee/depository of international treaties and agreements which the government of Timor-Leste has already signed or ratified;

To participate in national or international commissions and in international meetings or conferences, on matters within the Division’s competency;

To provide assistance concerning questions of international contention of which the State of Timor-Leste is a part;

To elaborate a synopsis and compile all important acts of solemnities of an international nature of which Timor-Leste is a part, or has an interest, as well as decisions of the supreme/higher? courts of nations of international law and the decisions of international tribunals of which Timor-Leste has acceptance/admitted/agreed or in the process of doing so, of which it is a part;

To proceed with the transmission and acceptance of extradition processes;

To proceed with the transmission and acceptance of requesting letters, as well as other juridical acts involving foreign countries.
Within the domain of national law, the tasks of the Division of Legal Affairs and Treaties are:

To provide an opinion, respond to ?, in elaborating studies about matters within the domain of internal law;

To collaborate in preparing and elaborating projects of diploma?, when requested;

To prepare projects of reply in contentious questions, and follow the respective processes in each different stage;

To intervene in any process of ? questions and disciplines as far as requested;
-
To support competent entities in preparing and monitoring process to the judgment of questions in which involved any activity of the Ministry.
