Statement of the Government of the Democratic Republic of Timor on the Iraqi Transitional Authority
The People and the Government of the Democratic Republic of Timor-Leste have followed with deep interest the developments in Iraq. They rejoice at the end of Saddam Hussein regime and the beginning of a new era that promises to be one based on freedom, democracy, Social Justice and rule of law.
In spite of the on going security problems and other challenges, the Government of Timor-Leste believes that the prospect for consolidation of peace and democracy can be enhanced if all parties set aside their past differences and work towards further consolidation of peace and democracy in Iraq.
The Government of Timor-Leste has taken good note of the appeal made by the Secretary General of the United Nations, Mr. Kofi Anan for the international community to recognize the Transitional Authority in Iraq.
In this regard, the Government of Timor-Leste stands ready to fully cooperate with the new authorities in Iraq and the Secretary General of the United Nations to ensure that democratic elections for the representative government in Iraq can take place as soon as possible.
The Government and the People of Democratic Republic of Timor-Leste commend the coalition authorities in Iraq for creating the conditions towards an Iraq Transitional Authority and democratic elections.
