TIMOR-LESTE PARTICIPATES IN ANTI-PERSONNEL MINES IN BANGKOK
Senior Minister and Minister for Foreign Affairs and Cooperation has assigned Mr. João Freitas de Câmara, Director of Legal Affairs for Ministry of Foreign Affairs to attend the 5th Conference on the “Convention of the Prohibition, Use, Transfer of Anti- Personnel Mines and on its Destruction” that will be held in Thailand, Bangkok from 15th-19th of September 2003.
“The objectives of this conference is to get Mine Affected countries together to make efforts and to give contributions for the destruction of all anti-personnel mine that so far have caused millions and millions of victims around the world, not only during the conflicts of war but also mines used at the borders of some countries to avoid illegal border crossings” said Mr. João Câmara.
“As a member of the Convention, it is important for Timor-Leste to take part in the conference, to contribute to the issues affecting the destruction of anti-personnel mines from all over the world”, added Mr. Câmara.
The participants of the conference are from all the members of the United Nations specially Mine Affected Countries, some UN Agencies, World Bank, ICRC and international NGO’s those who were involved in the protection of the victims of Mines and International human right organizations from all region around the world.
This conference is sponsored by the Geneva international Center for Humanitarian Demeaning especially for the poor countries.
