TIMOR-LESTE TO ATTEND 2nd WORKSOP ON INTERNATIONAL TRADE AND WTO AGREEMENT IMPLEMENTATION

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation has nominated a staff from the Division of Multilateral Affairs, Ms. Dirce Carolina de Fatima Soares, to attend the 2nd Workshop on International Trade and World Trade Organization (WTO) Agreement Implementation in Seoul – Korea, from 5 – 11 of October 2003.

The objective of this workshop is to provide necessary understanding and analytical capability to participants who may practice in relevant subject areas. The specific issues which are going to be discussed such as; WTO Trade Remedy Agreements and several dispute settlement cases. Number of participants are 15 from 9 countries. Each participant is requested to prepare and to present a Country Report as a means of sharing experiences and information.

“As a part of international community, Timor-Leste could apply to be a member of WTO. In fact that, nowadays the world is committed to global market and it can’t be denied. However our economic situation must be ready and well prepared in order to fulfill the high criteria which required by WTO. And above all, As soon as we meet the membership conditions of WTO, it means that we are ready to compete and survive in non-discriminatory open markets along with the developed countries equipped with high-technology and advanced knowledge. In this context, it is essential for developing countries to extend their understanding of WTO and to keep aware of major trends and issues that would affect international trade rules and regulations”, said Ms. Dirce Soares.

In addition, the sharing of experiences between participants in this workshop will help to gain a better understanding on policies, which can also heighten the possibility of economic cooperation between countries.
“It is important for Timor-Leste to participate in this workshop, because it will provide the essential understanding and find the advantages and disadvantages before and after WTO accession”, added Dirce.
