PRESIDENT XANANA GUSMÃO TO RECEIVE NEW PERUVIAN AMBASSADOR

Tomorrow morning at 10.00 o’clock at the Palace of the Ashes in Dili, H.E. President Kay Rala Xanana Gusmão will receive the letter of credentials from the new Ambassador of the Republic of Peru to Timor Leste, H.E. Mr. Nilo Figueroa Cortavarria.

Ambassador Cortavarria, an Economics graduate from the National University of Mayor de San Marcos, began his career in the Diplomatic Services serving as Third Secretary in the Directorate of Economic Affairs at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. From 1972 to 1998, he held various positions at the Peruvian Embassies in Algeria, Guatemala, Argentina, Chile, Uruguay and Brazil.

In addition to his services at the Embassies, throughout his distinguished career, Ambassador Cortavarria was also appointed Director of various sections in the Foreign Ministry, including that of General Communication, Information and Press, Protocol, Economy and International Cooperation. Ambassador Cortavarria was also the Diplomatic Advisor to the Presidency of the Congress as well as the President of Peruvian Section of the South Pacific Permanent Commission (CPPS).

In 2000, he was appointed the Peruvian Ambassador to Indonesia and as of tomorrow his accreditation will also include Timor-Leste, although he will continue to reside in Jakarta.

“I welcome Ambassador Cortavarria to Timor Leste. His appointment marks the beginning of diplomatic relations between Timor-Leste and Peru and I look forward to building on this relationship and exploring possible avenues for future economic cooperation”, stated President Xanana Gusmão.
