The Multilateral Division is the service of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation that aims to achieve East Timorese participation within international bodies and organisations, as well as within other relevant organisations relevant to sphere of East Timor’s external politics, and also economic and cultural spheres at the multilateral level.
The responsibilities of the Division of Multilateral Affairs focus on the following objectives:

To monitor processes relating to the participation of Timor-Leste in international organisations and meetings concerning political, economic, and cultural matters at the multilateral level;

To guide and coordinate the participation of Timor-Leste in meetings involving the United Nations and other specialised institutions;

To guide and coordinate the participation of Timor-Leste in other organisations and meetings outside of the region at the multilateral level, of which it is a part;

To review the operation of those organisations where Timor-Leste is not a member, or not yet a member, but whose activities are deemed of interest to the country;

To conduct negotiations and participate in denouncing treaties and agreements with respect to the creation of political or economic international organisations, outside of the region of which Timor-Leste is a part, their transformation and abolition and, in particular, those concerning the participation of Timor-Leste in such organisations;

To address any problems that may arise from the participation of Timor-Leste in international bodies and meetings that fall within the Division’s political, economic, or commercial jurisdictions;

To prepare and coordinate instructions, within the Division’s jurisdiction, for permanent Timorese delegations, and delegations attending international conferences and other international events concerning political or economic matters, and to Timor-Leste’s consular posts;

To collate all necessary information in order to ensure a definite national position on all matters concerning international cooperation and security, and on arms control and disarmament;

To attend meetings between the European-African Union, the Caribbean and the Pacific (UE-ACP);

To actively participate in the Community of People of the Portuguese Language (CPLP);

To closely monitor the activities of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Bank (WB);
